How did you get started training Jiu-Jitsu and how long ago was that?

I started training almost 9 years ago now. I heard of a gym (Black And Blue MMA) that does “UFC” style training near by. Since I already thought I was pretty tough, I had to go try it out. What a humbling experience to say the least, I was hooked!

What drives you in your Jiu-Jitsu life? What makes you want to get up in the morning and go train?

I always wanted to be the best at everything. I also wanted to love what I did though. It wasn’t until late in life that I discovered my passion, Jiu Jitsu. Before hand, I was unsure of a lot in life. I had no clue what I wanted to do when I grew up, every job I had sucked and I couldn’t understand why we are expected to spend most of our lives doing stuff we don’t absolutely love. I fell in love with BJJ from the start. I always dreamed of receiving my Black Belt and one day owning my own academy. I now also had something to be proud of and something my family can be proud of for me. I finally had a purpose. I have the power to help others through this beautiful art, to help kids stay on the right path and educate them how to make right decisions in life through Jiu Jitsu and for me that is powerful. I have dedicated my life to BJJ because I can’t imagine what it would be like with out it.

If there was one thing you would change about your Jiu-Jitsu, what would it be?

Tough question. I think that’s the beauty of training and hard work though. We CAN change anything we’d like with our Jiu Jitsu and I feel like every time we are on the mats that’s what we’re aiming to do. (Editor’s note: use code “OFFGRID10” to get 10% off at

If there was one thing you would change about your life, or the world in general, what would it be?

To me, life’s ultimate goal is happiness. That is the greatest wealth. I wish more people can just enjoy life and focus on the positive more and just be happy. There is so much in our everyday life that can easily bring us down. Money is just one example, and it’s something that gets printed out of thin air and slapped with a worthless value, yet it destroys lives and people kill over it. We can’t let stuff like that destroy our happiness. I just want everyone to be happy!!

Do you have a favorite memory about Jiu-jitsu you would like to share? Perhaps a couple?

The grand opening night of 99/1 BJJ in Coxsackie NY. I was given head instructor position and also got to promote my girlfriend & mother of my children to a blue belt and my fiance all at once. I got her belt embroidered with “will you marry me on it” and proposed to her in front of the entire 99/1 team!! Second favorite memory would be a recent one, The grand opening of my own academy in Cocoa Beach Florida!!! Off The Grid Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!!

What thing about Jiu-Jitsu brings you the most joy? What sets it apart from other things you enjoy?

Everything!  The lessons learned on the mats. The bond you grow with students, training partners and instructors. I love that we can go and train with the best guys in the world at anytime and not have to pay extra fees or spend $1,000 on back stage passes. I love how it is very humbling.

How would you categorize your BJJ Style?

Since I’m super small (135lbs) I’d have to say very tight and technical.

If you could spend 6 months training with anyone in the world who would it be?

Rickson Gracie

What are your goals in Jiu-jitsu? In Life? Are the two connected?

Absolutely, they are very connected. My goal is to train forever. I would love to be a black belt world champion one day, but even more so I would just love to be the best instructor and coach for my students, the best father for my children and the best husband for my wife. And of course the best athlete for my sponsor!!
